Looking for Truth

 Who's Your Daddy?

A seminary professor was vacationing with his wife in Gatlinburg, TN.  One morning, they were eating breakfast at a little restaurant, hoping to enjoy a quiet, family meal.  While they were waiting for their food, they noticed a distinguished looking, white-haired man moving from table to table, visiting with the guests.  The professor leaned over and whispered to his wife, 'I hope he doesn't come over here.'   But sure enough, the man did come over to their table.

'Where are you folks from?' he asked in a friendly voice.
'Oklahoma,' they answered.
'Great to have you here in Tennessee,' the stranger said.  'What do you do for a living?'
'I teach at a seminary,' he replied.

'Oh, so you teach preachers how to preach, do you?  Well, I've got a really great story for you.'   And with that, the gentleman pulled up a chair and sat down at the table with the couple.

The professor groaned and thought to himself, 'Great. Just what I need ...another preacher story!'

The man started, 'See that mountain over there?’ (Pointing out the restaurant window).  Not far from the base of that mountain, there was a boy born to an unwed mother.  He had a hard time growing up, because every place he went, he was always asked the same question, 'Hey boy, Who's your daddy?'  Whether he was at school, in the grocery store or drug store, people would ask the same question, 'Who's your daddy?'

He would hide at recess and lunchtime from other students.  He would avoid going into stores because that question hurt him so bad.  'When he was about 12 years old, a new preacher came to his church.  He would always go in late and slip out early to avoid hearing the question,  'Who's your daddy?'

But one day, the new preacher said the benediction so fast that he got caught and had to walk out with the crowd.

Just about the time he got to the back door, the new preacher, not knowing anything about him, put his hand on his shoulder and asked him, 'Son, who's your daddy?'

The whole church got deathly quiet.  He could feel every eye in the church looking at him.  Now everyone would finally know the answer to the question, 'Who's your daddy?'

'This new preacher, though, sensed the situation around him and using discernment that only the Holy Spirit could give, said the following to that scared little boy. 'Wait a minute! I know who you are!  I see the family resemblance now, “You” are a child of God.'

With that he patted the boy on his shoulder and said, 'Boy, you've got a great inheritance. Go and claim it.'

'With that, the boy smiled for the first time in a long time and walked out the door a changed person.   He was never the same again.   Whenever anybody asked him, 'Who's your Daddy?' he'd just tell them, 'I'm a Child of God.''

The distinguished gentleman got up from the table and said, 'Isn't that a great story?'

The professor responded that it really was a great story!

As the man turned to leave, he said, 'You know if that new preacher hadn't told me that I was one of God's children, I probably never would have amounted to anything!'  And he walked away.

The seminary professor and his wife were stunned.  He called the waitress over & asked her, 'Do you know who that man was -- the one who just left that was sitting at our table?'

The waitress grinned and said, 'Of course.  Everybody here knows him.   That's Ben Hooper.   He's governor of Tennessee!'

 What Room are YOU in?

A holy man was having a conversation with the Lord one day and said,
"Lord, I would like to know what Heaven and Hell are like."

The Lord led the holy man to two doors.

He opened one of the doors and the holy man looked in. In the middle of the room was a large round table. In the middle of the table was a large pot of stew, which smelled delicious and made the holy man's mouth water.

The people sitting around the table were thin and sickly. They appeared to be famished. They were holding spoons with very long handles that were strapped to their arms and each found it possible to reach into the pot of stew and take a spoonful.
But because the handle was longer than their arms, they could not get the spoons back into their mouths.

The holy man shuddered at the sight of their misery and suffering.

The Lord said, "You have seen Hell."

They went to the next room and opened the door. It was exactly the same as the first one. There was the large round table with the large pot of stew, which made the holy man's mouth water. The people were equipped with the same long-handled spoons, but here
the people were well nourished and plump, laughing and talking. The holy man said, "I don't understand."

It is simple," said the Lord.
"It requires but one skill. You see they have learned to feed each other, while the greedy think only of themselves."

 Feeling a bit Stretched?

Family – sometimes a blessing – sometimes a curse.  I know the Lord never gives us more than we can handle – but sometimes I think He believes I can handle more than I can – or maybe I should say - He surely gives me more than I want.

But...I’m feeling a bit stretched lately – just like an old cartoon figure I once knew – Without saying to much - I will just say that my Mother is coming to stay with me for the Winter months.  She is almost 80, alone, and needs to be with someone during the holidays and the cold winter months. I invited her here with us and I truly believe she was happy to accept. I will say more later but prayers for two women living in one house would be appropriate. As I said, a blessing or a curse depending on the day and the rotation of the earth.  Can you relate?

 Truer words Never spoken...

Love is but the song we sing,
And fear's the way we die
You can make the mountains ring
Or make the angels cry
Know the bird is on the wing
And you may not know why

C'mon people now,
Smile on your brother
Ev'rybody get together
Try and love one another right now

Some may come and some may go
We will surely pass
When the one that left us here
Returns for us at last
We are but a moments sunlight
Fading in the grass

C'mon people now,
Smile on your brother
Ev'rybody get together
Try and love one another right now

If you hear the song I sing,
You must understand
You hold the key to love and fear
All in your trembling hand
Just one key unlocks them both
It's there at your command

C'mon people now,
Smile on your brother
Ev'rybody get together
Try and love one another right now
Right now
Right now!

 The Valley of Elah

The Valley of Elah is a make you think movie.  It is not the typical “war” movie –  the majority of the movie doesn’t even take place in Iraq. But it does have "flash backs" that represent the pictures and video shots that the Son had sent home to Mom and Dad.

It is about every parent’s nightmare of losing a Son and the detective work of one determined Father.  Where is my Son and what happened to him after he got Stateside?  Then the search begins.

War is awful – it has always been awful – this movie is about the mental capacity of a human being and how that “awful” affects the outcome of those that not only fight in a war but how they cope during the fighting and when they return how their outlook has changed.

I give it an “A” and “four Stars”  - I also can’t say enough about Tommy Lee Jones acting and if I were ever lost I would want "him" to be the one looking for me.  My favorite scene was the last sequence in which Tommy Lee Jones talks with a school employee, and does something that sums up the entire movie.
